Marine battery market is charging up rapidly

Hybrid propulsion with batteries is changing marine propulsion for the better, and not just in the OSV sector.

Earlier this month I noted that although the market for offshore support vessels remains depressed for the time being, when it recovers, all newbuilds will have batteries. Well, maybe not absolutely all of them, but a good number of those built for more sophisticated markets.

Battery suppliers such as Plan B Energy Storage predict that most new vessels will have a battery room, with options for energy storage either integrated at the newbuild stage or added later. If not a battery room as such they may well have a containerised/modular battery pack.

As I noted here,  recent months have seen further important developments in battery-based hybrid energy systems for OSVs, including a platform supply vessel in which a hybrid power system replaced a generator.

Norway’s NOx funds wants to help owners refitting vessels that are on long-term contracts with hybrid energy solutions based on batteries. It has set a deadline for of 30 June 2018 for owners who want to apply for support for PSVs engaged on term charters.

This week also saw global aluminium supplier Hydro make a significant investment in Corvus Energy, which has number of contracts for batteries for OSVs. Hydro sees energy storage and battery solutions as an increasingly important part of the future of energy systems as whole. It’s right to do so. Batteries are being fitted on all kinds of vessels, from tugs to ferries to research ships. FinFerries and Siemens talk about the hybrid ferry Elektra here.

For the time being, the batteries in hybrid energy solutions for ships are being supplied by OEMs, but given the way demand is growing I’m sure it can’t be long before one of the battery companies is snapped up by a major marine industry player.

Norsk Hydro invests in Corvus Energy

Richmond, BC based Corvus Energy is jointly held by management, BW Group, Statoil Technology Invest, investors affiliated with El Cuervo Holdings Limited Partnership, Canadian and US family offices and private investors.

Corvus Energy (Corvus) today announced that it will supply its lithium ion based energy storage systems (ESS) to two platform supply vessels (PSVs) being retrofitted with hybrid power systems.
The Havila Foresight and the Havila Charisma - both of which are on long-term charter to Statoil ASA (Statoil) - will each be fitted with a 1000kWh Orca Energy ESS from Corvus, enabling "environmentally-friendly and lower cost operations."
The latest order brings the total number of Statoil-chartered vessels to be supplied with Corvus ESS to six.
"Corvus is proud to be part of Statoil's commitment to the environment and their goal of becoming a leader in cleaner oil & gas production as they leverage renewable energy technologies such as the Orca ESS," said Roger Rosvold, Sales Manager of Corvus Energy.

In July, Ship & Bunker reported that Corvus Energy would supply its ESS the Statoil-chartered and Farstad Shipping ASA (Farstad)-owned diesel electric PSV Far Sun, which is expected to see reductions in fuel consumption and emissions as a result.
Commenting on the latest order, Corvus today said: "the hybridization of these two vessels is part of Statoil's ambition of being a leading company in carbon-efficient oil and gas production.
"Statoil is focusing on reducing emissions from their logistics activities and has mandated that all new charters shall utilise energy storage systems during all aspects of the PSV's operation, particularly during dynamic positioning and harbour operations where fuel consumption and emissions will be significantly reduced."
As Ship & Bunker reported in June, this year's Electric & Hybrid Marine Awards saw Corvus win the Supplier of the Year award for the third year in a row, as well as the Innovation of the Year award for its Orca Energy ESS.

CORVUS ENERGY TO PROVIDE BATTERY SYSTEMS FOR HYBRID FISHING VESSELS


Norwegian maritime electronics firm Elmarin has selected the lithium ion-based Orca energy storage system for installation on the vessels.
The fishing vessels, which will each be equipped with an energy storage system (ESS) with a capacity of 250 kWh, are slated for delivery in mid-2018.
Halvard Hauso, SVP Business Development of Corvus Energy, commented on the contract award: ‘This project is a good example of how the marine industry is quickly moving towards hybrid power for more cost effective and environmentally friendly operations.’
Lars Eide, head of electric propulsion systems at Elmarin AS, added: ‘In these projects, we had the privilege to work closely with an enthusiastic ship owner who really wanted to make a difference, and together with several other competent partners we designed a complete solution for the vessels that meets all the requirements for this application.
‘The battery system is a very important factor to the whole solution. Thanks to financial support from Enova, the projects will now be realised and we believe they will be a trend setter for this market.’

Corvus Energy has been awarded both “Supplier of the Year” and “Innovation of the Year” at the 2017 Electric & Hybrid Marine Awards being held at the Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo. This is the third consecutive year that Corvus has received the Supplier of the Year award and a first time win for Innovation of the Year. The award recipients are decided up on by a panel of highly regarded industry experts.
