Visedo to power breakthrough hybrid ice ferry for Swedish islands


Visedo has won the contract to deliver a hybrid electric propulsion system for a new Swedish ice-going passenger ferry.
The hybrid diesel-electric vessel will be capable of carrying 150 passengers through the often icy waters around the islands of the Stockholm archipelago, off the Swedish capital.
Visedo’s hybrid electric system will reduce fuel consumption and emissions, as well as providing quieter operation and less maintenance costs. The ferry will also feature selective catalytic reduction and diesel particulate filters to further reduce its environmental impact.
Stockholm County Council engaged Swedish marine consulting firm Saltech for the design and specification of the ferry, which will be built at the Baltic Workboats shipyard in Estonia. The vessel was expected to be completed to enter service with Waxholmsbolaget, the region’s leading ferry operator, in summer 2018.
Visedo will provide full customer support during the vessel’s design phase, as well as a 24-hour service line and a service engineer on standby. The Finnish manufacturer will also deliver technical management during procurement, construction and delivery of the vessel.

CORVUS ENERGY TO PROVIDE BATTERY SYSTEMS FOR HYBRID FISHING VESSELS


Norwegian maritime electronics firm Elmarin has selected the lithium ion-based Orca energy storage system for installation on the vessels.
The fishing vessels, which will each be equipped with an energy storage system (ESS) with a capacity of 250 kWh, are slated for delivery in mid-2018.
Halvard Hauso, SVP Business Development of Corvus Energy, commented on the contract award: ‘This project is a good example of how the marine industry is quickly moving towards hybrid power for more cost effective and environmentally friendly operations.’
Lars Eide, head of electric propulsion systems at Elmarin AS, added: ‘In these projects, we had the privilege to work closely with an enthusiastic ship owner who really wanted to make a difference, and together with several other competent partners we designed a complete solution for the vessels that meets all the requirements for this application.
